At Sherborne House Nursery we offer high quality care and learning for children aged 6 months-5 years, in an environment where every child is valued and supported to thrive. At Sherborne House we understand that early childhood is a journey filled with curiosity, discovery and rapid development which is why our nursery is thoughtfully structured into three age-appropriate units.
Nursery
Nursery Rooms
Baby Unit
Hoglets 6 months-16 months
Hedgehogs 17 months-2 years
Our cosy and calm Baby Unit is designed to feel like a home away from home. With a strong focus on warmth, routine and one-to-one attention, we support your baby’s early development through sensory play, songs, stories and lots of cuddles. Each child has a key person to provide continuity, comfort and personalised care.
Our curriculum for babies is thoughtfully built around the three Prime Areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS):
Physical Development
We nurture your baby’s physical growth by supporting the key milestones of crawling, cruising and walking. Our specialist teachers deliver baby-safe P.E. sessions, offering opportunities for freedom of movement, balance and coordination. Babies can safely practise jumping, climbing and exploring, both indoors and in our beautifully designed outdoor spaces that inspire natural curiosity and discovery. We also begin to introduce early self-help and fine motor skills, from learning to use spoons during mealtimes, to scooping and pouring in sand and water play, and enjoying a variety of messy and sensory experiences.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Nurturing relationships are at the heart of everything we do. Our caring and consistent approach helps babies feel secure, building the foundations for future friendships and confidence as they grow.
Communication and Language
Through the introduction of core books, we immerse our babies in rich language experiences. Our specialist music teacher enhances this with sessions filled with rhythm, rhyme, and song which encourages early speech development and a love of sound, tone and storytelling.
Toddler Unit
Cubs 2-3 years
Badgers 2-3 years
In our Toddler Unit, little ones are busy exploring their independence and building confidence. Our caring team guides them through hands-on learning experiences that develop language, social skills and physical coordination all through our child led curriculum. As well as developing their independence and self help skills we encourage our children to use their freedom of choice throughout the day by offering a continuous range of activities and opportunities that they can get involved in at their own pace, including role play, ICT, board games, puzzles, construction, threading, literacy, loose parts, small world, messy play and creative activities. In order to extend and scaffold your child’s learning and to support the development of social skills like sharing and friendships we offer a variety of adult-led activities like singing, stories, meal times, and music and movement. Each of our rooms are utilised with careful consideration to the age and stage of each child as we are very aware that every child’s needs differ from each other, some are already confident and adventurous, and some need a little extra care and attention.
We actively promote physical development everyday in both our Cub and Badger Rooms through a variety of different activities including P.E, yoga, dance, squiggle while you wiggle, climbing, balancing, gardening and riding bikes. Physical activity encourages the development of hand eye coordination for reading and writing.
Communication language and literacy – Our children enjoy singing, reading, visiting the school library, drawing and finding out through play about letters and phonetic sounds. We know that by sharing books and telling favourite stories over and over again we can build special bonds and encourage conversations. Children love to talk about all sorts of things and share their ideas and experiences. We encourage your child to always express their thoughts, develop their voice and extend their vocabulary.
Personal, social and emotional development – In our Toddler Unit we encourage the development of making independent choices and support your child to begin to learn about their needs and feelings.
Mathematics – We enjoy extending important learning opportunities with your child. During their time in Cub’s and Badger’s we will support your child to begin to make predictions, understand familiar routines, sort and arrange objects and develop their mathematical language. Through play and songs your child will find out about size, numbers, shapes, colours, and learn to use their fingers to represent quantities.
Understanding of the world – Our Toddler children love to explore and extend their learning in our outdoor environments e.g. foraging for fruits to use in our cooking, catching minibeasts, digging for worms, jumping in puddles, and learning to stay safe as we use our forest school area. We also teach the children that it is very important to learn about different cultures and each other, therefore we enjoy sharing and learning about each other’s home languages and celebrations.
Expressive arts and design – Our Cub’s and Badger’s love to engage in role play and pretend play. This type of play helps your child to learn about other people’s ideas, feelings and actions. By pretending to be someone else they can begin to imagine other’s points of views. We also enjoy expressing ourselves through creative activities, like art, paint, music and dance and join in with short music sessions. Every music session with our specialist teacher will be different and our children will be given the opportunity to explore a variety of topic based songs with actions, and be introduced to different instruments.
Pre-Reception 3+
Our Pre-Reception Room prepares children for their next steps into school. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum, with an emphasis on communication, creativity, early maths and literacy, and self-care skills. We encourage curiosity, resilience, and a love of learning through child-led play, structured group time, and exciting projects
A Day in Nursery
Nursery Curriculum
At Sherborne House Nursery we support curiosity, independence, and a lifelong love of learning. We follow a child-led approach, which means we place your child’s interests, choices, and natural curiosity at the heart of everything we do.
Rather than sticking rigidly to a set plan, our skilled practitioners observe what excites and engages your child whether it is dinosaurs, water play, building towers, or spotting bugs in the garden and then use those interests as a springboard for deeper learning.
Our child-led curriculum is underpinned by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework. While we meet all the key developmental areas, we do so in a way that is meaningful and engaging for each individual child.
Nursery Manager
I have worked in early years education for over 17 years, and it continues to be the most rewarding journey. I hold a BA in Early Childhood Education, along with training in safeguarding and leadership.
As Nursery Manager, I am passionate about creating a safe, nurturing, and inspiring environment where every child can thrive and every family feels supported and valued. I believe in strong partnerships with parents, child-led learning, and supporting our team to be the very best they can be.
My role is to lead the nursery day-to-day, ensure the highest standards of care and education, and build trusting relationships with our families. You will often see me in and out of rooms, working alongside our brilliant team, chatting with children, and ensuring the nursery runs smoothly.
Assessment and reporting
At Sherborne House Nursery, we use Tapestry, a secure online learning journal, to record, assess, and celebrate your child’s development throughout their time with us.
Tapestry allows us to document special moments, milestones, and everyday learning in a way that is easy for you to follow and enjoy.
We use Tapestry to capture photos and videos of your child engaged in play and learning, observations linked to the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) areas of development
- Progress updates and next steps tailored to your child’s individual needs
- Reflections on how your child is settling, what they enjoy, and how they are growing
These observations help us to track development and plan future activities that follow your child’s interests. Tapestry also helps us build a stronger connection between nursery and home so we can celebrate your child’s achievements together, every step of the way.
