Catering Assistant

Reporting to: Catering Manager

Contract type: Term-time only 36 weeks per year

Salary: From £8,500 per annum depending on experience 

Additional hours will be paid for other duties including parents’ evenings and school functions depending on business need. Hours of work: Monday to Friday, 10am – 2pm, 20 hours per week, 36 weeks per year.

The school’s in-house catering department provides around 300 core meals a day for staff and pupils during term time. In addition, the school provides a morning snack, sandwich tea for it’s after school club together with match teas and hospitality as required. This is produced from a well-equipped main kitchen. Our Nursery facility is open on a full time basis all year round offering catering for babies from 6 months to children aged 4 and requires the provision of age appropriate meals.

Job Description

  • To assist in the preparation, cooking, presentation and service of food at the required times, observing the school’s standards of high quality and portion control.
  • To contribute to the food innovation and to assist in delivering new ideas and concepts in line with the school’s vision for an improved food offering.
  • To assist with the receiving, checking and storing of supplies.
  • To have a good understanding of all catering and health and safety policies.
  • To be motivated and enjoy being part of a team, you’ll be physically able to help set the dining hall up and pack away at the end of the day.

Infrequent Duties

  • To assist with special functions, such as parents evening, which may sometimes require work outside of normal working hours (additional payment will be offered). 
  • Report any unfit food or defects in the equipment or premises.
  • Take part in any training sessions or meetings which may be organised.

Additional Responsibilities

  • To ensure that the school’s and statutory regulations in relation to health, safety and hygiene are complied with in all tasks undertaken.
  • To maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and appearance, including wearing of protective clothing provided by the school.
  • To keep all working areas and equipment for which you are responsible in a clean and hygienic condition especially at the end of the day.

Skills and Experience

  • Minimum of level 2 food hygiene certificate is desirable (training will be given for the successful applicant)
  • Experience of working in a school catering environment or large scale catering facility is desirable
  • Able to work flexibly and be able to provide cover for occasional functions is essential
