Year 6 Residential to France

Excitement filled the air as Year 6 set off on their long-awaited residential trip to France. After weeks of counting down the days, the children boarded the ferry full of energy and anticipation, ready for a week of adventure, discovery, and unforgettable memories. From exciting on-site activities to fascinating visits around Normandy, the trip was packed with experiences that everyone will remember for years to come.

The children quickly settled into life at the centre and wasted no time getting involved in the huge variety of activities on offer. One of the new activities we tried this year was photogramme. The children enjoyed taking a photo home. Another favourite was aeroball, which combined trampolining and basketball, resulting in lots of laughter and friendly competition.

Bread making gave everyone the chance to learn a traditional skill and get wonderfully messy at the same time. The children were proud to taste their creations afterwards. The visit to the on-site farm was another memorable experience, especially for the animal lovers in the group. The rabbits proved particularly popular, and there were plenty of smiles as the children had the chance to cuddle them.

Throughout the week, pupils also challenged themselves with fencing and climbing activities. Learning fencing techniques made everyone feel like expert duelists, while the climbing sessions encouraged bravery and resilience. It was fantastic to see children stepping outside their comfort zones and supporting one another to succeed. In archery, pupils tested their aim and concentration while cheering each other on. Many discovered hidden talents and were thrilled when they managed to hit the target.

The residential was not only about adventure activities; it was also a wonderful opportunity to explore French culture and history. A visit to a traditional French market allowed the children to practise their language skills as they bought souvenirs and sampled local treats. Many enjoyed trying out their French phrases with the stall holders and came away with bags full of gifts and snacks.

One of the most breathtaking trips was to Mont Saint-Michel. The children were amazed by the spectacular island abbey and loved exploring the narrow streets and historic buildings. Another moving visit was to the American Cemetery, where pupils reflected thoughtfully on the sacrifices made during World War II. It was a meaningful experience that helped bring their classroom learning to life.

A visit to the caramel farm was certainly one of the sweetest moments of the week. The children learned how caramel is made before eagerly tasting the delicious samples. Unsurprisingly, many returned to the château carrying bags full of caramel treats to take home!

Perhaps the overall favourite evening of the trip was the visit to a traditional crêperie. Everyone enjoyed delicious crêpes and galettes with a variety of toppings, and the relaxed atmosphere made it a wonderful way to spend time together. Meal times were always a highlight, with many children trying out new dishes. The BBQ on the last night was particularly popular, but even les escargots were described by some as “delicious” or “not that bad”… which is definitely a win!

The children said:

“I enjoyed everything, but aeroball was my favourite.”

“I enjoyed going to the crêperie because it was really nice food, and it was a lovely experience.”

“I loved Jam the parrot.”

“I loved the mini farm most, but I enjoyed all the activities. Thank you to everyone at the château for making our week incredible!”

We are incredibly proud of the children for embracing every opportunity during the week, whether that meant trying out their French, tasting new foods, taking on new activities, or supporting their friends. By the end of the residential, Year 6 returned home tired but full of stories to tell. They had grown in confidence, independence and resilience, and created memories that will stay with them for many years to come. It was a truly fantastic week and a wonderful way to celebrate their final year at Sherborne.
