Five things every child learns in our Reception class

At Sherborne House School, Reception is such a special and transformative year. It is often a child’s very first experience of school life, and we are incredibly proud to create an environment where every child feels safe, valued, inspired and excited to learn. As a Reception teacher, there are five key areas that truly shape the children’s journey throughout the year and prepare them beautifully for the next stage of their education.

The first is fostering a genuine love for learning. In Reception, learning should feel magical, exciting and meaningful. Our children become so deeply engaged in their play and exploration that they often do not even realise how much they are learning. Their interests guide so much of what we do, whether it is building castles, investigating minibeasts, creating imaginative role-play scenarios or exploring the natural world outdoors. We carefully observe the children’s curiosities and use these to spark purposeful learning opportunities. The result is a classroom full of awe, wonder and enthusiasm, where children become confident explorers and eager learners from the very beginning.

Another hugely important focus is independence. From day one, we encourage the children to become independent learners. We help, model and support them every step of the way so they gradually develop the confidence to take ownership of their belongings, learning, friendships and responsibilities. By the end of Reception, it is wonderful to see how capable and resilient the children become. This independence links beautifully to “OUR STORY”, the school values that are woven throughout every part of our day. The children learn the importance of kindness, responsibility, perseverance and respect, helping to shape not only successful learners, but thoughtful and caring individuals too.

Communication and language development is another key priority in Reception, and something we take enormous pride in. Developing vocabulary and encouraging children to articulate themselves clearly and confidently is fundamental to all areas of learning. We nurture this through careful modelling from adults, alongside meaningful opportunities for children to share their own ideas and experiences. Tapestry News is always a favourite part of our week. The children love coming to the front of the class to talk about their weekend news or special experiences from home. Through this, they learn to speak in full sentences, listen attentively to their friends, and ask and answer thoughtful questions. By the end of Reception, the progress is remarkable, as children begin to think carefully about how to ask effective questions and respond appropriately and confidently in discussions.

In maths, we place a strong emphasis on depth of understanding. Our aim is for children to become successful mathematicians who truly understand mathematical concepts. The children are challenged and encouraged to explain their thinking, reason carefully and solve problems practically. They become confident at subitising, recognising patterns and using mathematical language with ease. Through practical resources, games and hands-on learning, maths becomes enjoyable, meaningful and engaging. This strong foundation prepares them brilliantly for the expectations of Year 1 and beyond.

Finally, relationships are at the very heart of Reception life. We work hard to ensure every child feels safe, secure and valued within our school community. The friendships formed during this year are incredibly special, and the children quickly develop strong bonds with both peers and staff. They are also given wonderful opportunities to work alongside older children through shared learning experiences such as reading buddies and Golden Thread activities within their House teams. These moments help children feel part of the wider school family and support a happy and successful learning journey throughout their time at school.

Here at Sherborne House School, little minds grow with curiosity, friendships blossom with kindness, and every day is filled with joyful learning in a nurturing environment.
