Enrichment at Sherborne House School: Learning Beyond the Classroom

At Sherborne House School, learning goes far beyond the four walls of the classroom. We believe that education is about nurturing curiosity, confidence, character and creativity, helping every child to grow not only as a learner, but as a well-rounded individual ready to embrace the wider world.

Our enrichment opportunities are woven into everyday school life, giving every pupil the chance to discover new interests, develop leadership skills, and create lasting memories. From exciting curriculum-linked experiences to leadership roles, residential adventures and whole-school events, life at Sherborne House is full of opportunities that inspire and challenge.

Bringing Learning to Life

We know that children learn best when they are fully engaged and can connect their learning to real experiences.

In Humanities, our Stone Age to Iron Age workshop brought history to life in an exciting and memorable way. Pupils were able to step back in time, handling artefacts and immersing themselves in the world they had been studying in class. Importantly, this workshop was fully provided by the school, ensuring every child could take part without additional cost to families.

As part of their Religious Education studies, our Year 6 pupils welcomed a Humanist visitor to school to learn more about Humanism as a non-religious worldview. This valuable experience gave children the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions, explore different beliefs and values, and deepen their understanding of how Humanists make moral decisions and view the world. The visit encouraged respectful discussion, critical thinking and greater appreciation of diversity in beliefs and perspectives.

Our curriculum-linked trips also provide rich opportunities for deeper learning. Visits to places such as Butser Farm, the Living Rainforest, the D-Day Story Museum, Southampton Spitfire Museum, Hiltingbury Lakes and the local library allow pupils to experience learning first-hand and make meaningful connections across subjects and the wider world.

Science is brought to life through hands-on experiences too. Watching caterpillars transform into butterflies and observing chick eggs hatch gives children a real sense of wonder and helps them develop a deeper understanding of the natural world.

A Love of Reading and Writing

At Sherborne House, we place huge value on reading and writing as the foundation of lifelong learning.

Whole-school writing focus projects create excitement and inspiration across every year group. A recent mystery superhero video sparked imagination throughout the school, inspiring pupils to write creatively, think critically and share their own unique ideas.

Our newly-launched Golden Reads initiative encourages children to explore a rich variety of new texts for each year group. Pupils are rewarded with golden tickets, prizes and certificates as they progress through their reading journey, helping to foster a genuine love of books.

World Book Day is always a highlight, and this year we were delighted to welcome author Ali Sparkes to Sherborne House. Her workshops with Years 4, 5 and 6 inspired our young writers, giving them valuable insight into the writing process and encouraging them to think like real authors.

Languages with Purpose and Creativity

Language learning at Sherborne House is practical, relevant and full of creativity.

In French and Spanish lessons, pupils use drama and role play to build confidence in speaking. Younger children use finger puppets to practise conversations, while older pupils have taken part in French fashion shows, created their own songs and used Euros in shopping role plays to make learning feel authentic and engaging.

Our Year 6 pupils extend their learning even further by writing letters in French to Year 6 children at a partner school in France, creating a real-world purpose for their communication skills.

We also celebrate the diversity of languages and cultures within our own school community through Languages Day, where parents share and teach their own languages and traditions, helping children appreciate the richness of the world around them.

Leadership and Pupil Voice

Developing leadership and responsibility is a key part of life at Sherborne House.

Our School Council plays an active role in shaping school life. The School Council Shop now runs every other week, offering branded Sherborne House School items chosen by the children themselves. The shop is fully managed by School Council members, helping them develop teamwork, responsibility and enterprise skills.

The School Council also organised a successful Film Night, raising £300 for George’s Rockstars, which was then doubled through a charity partnership – an excellent example of pupils making a real difference.

Across the school, pupils take on weekly job monitor responsibilities, supporting the smooth running of school life and building independence from an early age.

In Lower School, Year 3 pupils undertake lunchtime leadership roles in pairs, including Buddy Bench Friends, hockey referees, music station leaders and chalking leaders. These roles help children build confidence, empathy and teamwork while supporting younger pupils.

Our Steps to Leadership programme for Years 4 to 6 further develops these important life skills, preparing pupils for future responsibilities both inside and outside school.

Sport, Teamwork and Healthy Competition

Sport plays a huge role in enriching school life at Sherborne House, helping pupils develop resilience, teamwork, confidence and a lifelong love of physical activity.

Children regularly represent the school in competitions against local schools, including hockey, football, cross country, dodgeball and athletics. These events help pupils develop commitment, sportsmanship and perseverance, while taking pride in representing Sherborne House and supporting one another as a team.

We also run half-termly and end-of-term photo competitions celebrating the wide range of sporting activities pupils enjoy outside of school. Entries have included sailing, skiing, snowboarding, horse riding, running, hiking, cycling, surfing and much more.

The diversity of activities highlights the enthusiasm of our pupils and families and reflects our ‘Sport for All’ ethos. Through participation in clubs and activities, children develop healthy, active lifestyles and lifelong habits.

Alongside this, we offer inclusive and targeted clubs such as Invitational Running, Art Scholars, Art for All and 11+ Preparation, ensuring every child has the opportunity to develop their individual talents and interests.

Residentials, Trips and Memorable Experiences

Some of the most treasured memories come from shared adventures and special experiences.

Our residential trips to France, Wales, Stubbington and Minstead provide pupils from Year 3 onwards with opportunities for independence, resilience and teamwork in exciting new environments.

Younger pupils also enjoy their own unforgettable experiences, including the Year 2 Sleepover – a pizza evening and overnight stay in the school hall – helping children build confidence and friendships.

Year 6 celebrations are particularly memorable, with trips to London, end-of-year productions, street parties and special events marking the end of their Sherborne House journey in style.

Our Whole School Day Out is another highlight of the year, bringing the entire school community together for shared fun, adventure and celebration.

Celebrating Community and Inclusion

At Sherborne House, enrichment also means helping children understand and respect the world around them.

Trips and workshops linked to faiths and beliefs within our school community help pupils develop curiosity, respect and understanding. Visits to places of worship, parent-led assemblies and cultural workshops all contribute to a broad and inclusive education that prepares children for life in modern Britain.

More Than a School

Enrichment at Sherborne House School is not an “extra” – it is at the heart of who we are.

Every trip, workshop, leadership role, competition, performance and shared experience helps shape confident learners, kind friends, thoughtful leaders and ambitious young people.

We are proud to offer our pupils opportunities that inspire them to think bigger, aim higher and discover more about themselves and the world around them.

Because at Sherborne House, education is not just about what happens in lessons – it is about creating a childhood full of opportunity, adventure and growth.
