Is your child ready for Reception?

Starting school is a huge milestone, and it can feel daunting, not just for children, but for parents too. It’s completely natural to wonder whether your child is ready for Reception. The truth is, there isn’t a checklist that every child must complete before they walk through the classroom door. Children develop at different rates, and at Sherborne House School, we are experienced in supporting every child wherever they are on their journey.

Our nurturing environment and carefully planned Early Years approach are designed to make this transition as smooth and positive as possible, helping children to settle quickly and begin to build a lifelong love of learning.

There are, however, some reassuring signs you can look out for. These small but meaningful developments help lay the foundations for a happy and confident start to school.

Social & Emotional Readiness

Social and emotional development plays a central role in the Early Years Foundation Stage. When thinking about school, it’s helpful to consider how your child interacts with others. Are they beginning to show confidence in social situations? Are they starting to develop independence in small ways?

Your child doesn’t need to be fearless. However, showing an interest in other children, playing alongside them, beginning to share toys, or responding to simple interactions are all positive signs. Being able to separate from a parent, even if there are a few tears at first, is also a good indicator.

At Sherborne House, we expect those first-day nerves and are always ready with a warm welcome, reassurance, and plenty of care. Our small class sizes allow us to give each child the individual attention they need to feel safe, supported and settled from the very beginning.

Communication

Communication is another key area. Children don’t need perfect speech, but being able to express basic needs, such as asking for help, saying when they’re thirsty, or sharing how they feel, can make a big difference to their confidence.

Listening skills are just as important and continue to develop over time. Can your child follow simple instructions like “put your coat on the peg” or “come and sit on the carpet”? These small, everyday skills help children settle into the rhythm of the classroom.

Through a rich, language-focused environment and meaningful interactions with both teachers and peers, we support children in developing their communication skills, ensuring they feel heard, understood and confident to express themselves.

Managing Feelings

Children who are beginning to manage their feelings, even in small ways, often find the transition to Reception smoother. This doesn’t mean they won’t feel upset or frustrated; that’s completely normal. But they may start to calm down with support or use simple strategies, such as talking to an adult or asking for help.

In Reception, we place a strong emphasis on helping children understand and express their emotions. Alongside their academic learning, we nurture personal, social and emotional development, supporting children to grow into confident, resilient individuals.

Curiosity & Independence

Curiosity is a wonderful sign of readiness. Children who show an interest in the world around them, asking questions, exploring, and noticing new things like the weather or the day of the week are already engaging in the kind of learning that Reception encourages.

At Sherborne House, our thematic, skills-based curriculum is designed to build on this natural curiosity. Children are encouraged to explore, discover and take an active role in their learning, supported by specialist teaching in areas such as music, physical education and languages from the very start of their school journey.

Developing independence is equally important. Simple skills such as managing personal belongings, attempting self-care tasks, or trying something new all help children feel more confident and capable within the classroom environment.

A Gentle Transition

We know that starting school is a big step, which is why we place great importance on supporting a smooth and positive transition into Reception. Through opportunities to become familiar with the environment, routines and staff, children are able to build confidence and feel secure before their first full day.

Ultimately, the most important thing is that your child feels safe, supported and valued. Try not to compare your child to others, and instead celebrate the small but significant steps — whether that’s learning to share, expressing a need, or showing curiosity about the world. These are all wonderful signs that they are ready to begin their school journey.
