At Sherborne House, every child’s journey is shaped by our commitment to knowing them as individuals, nurturing their confidence and inspiring a genuine love of learning. One of the ways we achieve this is through discrete year group only classes, which provide a focused, supportive environment where pupils can flourish both academically and personally. Whilst this was once the norm, schools under financial pressure (both state and independent settings) are now beginning to group vertically (for example, Year R/ Year 1 or Year 4/ Year 5).
This structure enables us to live out our school values—courtesy, kindness, diligence and taking pride in our work—in meaningful, everyday ways. It also strengthens the Sherborne House Golden Thread, which runs through every aspect of school life, helping children develop self-belief and curiosity as they discover what truly inspires them.
Pastoral care lies at the heart of a happy school. In single-year-group classes, teachers build strong, trusting relationships with pupils, understanding the needs, friendships and challenges unique to that age group. This encourages children to:
- Feel known, valued and supported
- Show kindness and respect in their interactions
- Grow in confidence as they navigate new experiences
Within these cohesive year groups, pupils develop a sense of belonging and learn the importance of courtesy and care for others.
Single-year-group teaching allows for carefully planned, age-appropriate learning that consolidates, challenges or supports the learning of every child. Our teachers design lessons that respond directly to the developmental stage of their classes, helping them to:
- Build firm foundations in core and transdisciplinary skills
- Develop independence and curiosity
- Achieve their best through sustained diligence
- Take pride in the progress they make, whilst striving to achieve the next steps identified
This thoughtful approach strengthens their Golden Thread, encouraging children to become enthusiastic learners who relish new ideas and enjoy taking on challenges.
As we know, a well-rounded education extends far beyond the classroom. With single-year-group classes, enrichment opportunities can be tailored to each stage of a child’s development—whether it’s a themed workshop, a musical performance, a sporting challenge or a residential trip.
These shared experiences help pupils to:
- Develop teamwork and resilience
- Explore new interests with confidence
- Celebrate their strengths and support one another
Enrichment becomes a space where children discover passions, practise kindness and take pride in their achievements.
Opportunities for leadership grow naturally as children progress through the school. Because pupils learn alongside others of the same age, we can offer responsibilities that are both appropriate and meaningful.
- Younger pupils learn to help, organise and contribute within their class community
- Older pupils can lead by example, support younger children and take on whole-school roles
- All pupils learn that leadership is rooted in respect, empathy and integrity
This approach nurtures confident, thoughtful young people who understand the value of contributing positively to their community.
Our classes provide clarity, consistency and tailored support at every stage of school life. They help us uphold our school values, strengthen pastoral care, raise academic expectations and create rich experiences that stay with children long after they start their next academic chapter.
