Upper Prep

Hello and welcome to Upper School at Sherborne House! We strive to provide and deliver an environment for all children in the Upper School, where their academic,  social and personal interests and endeavours are nurtured, supported and encouraged to grow, helping the children to be happy, capable and confident learners as they then embark onto the next stage of the schooling journey. We provide a curriculum that ensures our children are fully prepared for life beyond Year 6; whether that be for 11+ Entry Exams at Grammar or Independent destinations, or moving into the state sector.

A Day in Upper School

During these key years of schooling, the focus for form, academic and specialist tutors is to ensure that all children are academically stretched, with bespoke 1-1 and small group support where necessary. We achieve this through our small class sizes and use of specialist tutors throughout. All staff within the Upper School aim to foster a love of learning through our thematic curriculum, all while still striving for academic success and ensuring that each child reaches their full potential. In the Upper School, children benefit from specialised teaching in Performing Arts (Music & Drama), PE & Games, PSHE and Modern & Foreign Languages (French & Spanish). The children are also presented with the opportunity to regularly attend sporting fixtures against other local Prep schools, as well as National ISA Competitions.

Pupils in the Upper Prep are afforded opportunities to further develop their leadership skills in a wide range of areas.

Upon entering Year 4, children are actively encouraged to showcase their leadership skills through our bespoke programme, STEPS to Leadership. This programme runs through the duration of the children’s time in Upper School, and provides them opportunities to develop, enhance and reflect on their leadership skills through a variety of activities, completed both in and outside of school. As the children enter Year 6, they are able to build on these further by applying for Senior Prefect roles. These range from Head & Deputy Boy & Girl and House/Sport/Music Captains to Lower School Prefects and Eco-Counsellors.

Assessment and reporting

Throughout the Upper School, children will undergo a series of assessments that build upon their previous learning and help us to gauge an accurate picture of where your child is performing academically. This, alongside our daily teacher judgements and marking of work completed in lessons, informs our Pupil Progress Meetings and allows us as a team – Child, Form Tutor, Academic Lead & Parents – to set, review and implement any targets to ensure your child reaches their full potential. Your child’s progress and targets are then regularly shared with you via Parents’ Evenings, Reports and progress meetings with Form Tutors. A full list of assessments completed within the Upper School can be found on the above graphic.
