Pre-Reception

A day in the life of Pre-Reception

Our day starts from 7.30am, where the children meet in Cedar Hall to have a filling breakfast to set them up for the day.

At 8.15am, we walk over to the Pre-Reception unit ready for our action-filled day! First the children find their named pegs to put away their belongings. Then we play until the tidy up music is put on and we sit down ready for morning group time, which begins at 9am. During our group time, we say and sign good morning to our teachers and friends, sing the ‘Days of the Week’ song and ‘How’s the Weather Today’ song.. We also share any Show and Tell the children have sent in via our Tapestry app. The children will then split into two groups to begin their day.

The theme of the week is introduced every Monday, with a range of new activities introduced each day. Every Friday, parents will be informed of the children’s interests and theme for the following week, with some home learning ideas to share during our morning group time.

Throughout the day, the children receive specialist lessons from school teachers including French, PE, Forest School and Music, as well as continuous provision and adult led jobs provided by the Pre-Reception team. For children starting school the following September, Phonics and Early Maths lessons will begin in January. Later, they will start bringing home reading books to practise storytelling and reinforce their new phonics skills.

At 11.40am, the children walk over to the Wise Hall for lunch, where they will sit around the table together with the adults, to share a family meal. The children pass around cutlery before the lunch is served by their adults. After lunch, the children head out to the early years garden for free play.

During the afternoon, the children will then continue their learning during continuous provision and specialist lessons. The children are encouraged to extend their learning through planned adult-led jobs and independent activities, as well as construction, role play and messy play.

At 4pm, the children will get ready for tea and enjoy some downtime in the rooms, before heading over to the nursery at 5.15pm to be picked up by parents and carers. This will include cosmic yoga, self regulation songs, stories and puzzles.

The nursery closes at 6pm, for everyone to rest and prepare for another exciting fun-filled day.
