The children in Year 2 enjoyed our recent topic on position and direction in maths in which they learned how to navigate their way around a grid accurately using compass directions. They also learned how to record the position of an object on a grid using coordinates. To show how much they had learned, the children played a game of “Battleships” which required them to place three different sized ships on a grid. With a partner, they then took turns to call out coordinates in an effort to be the first to locate and “sink” all of their opponent’s ships. The children relished the opportunity to apply their learning in a fun, interactive way and many said that they would go on to play the game at home with family.
