An initially cold week was warmed up with a variety of activities throughout the school as we launched our new exciting PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) initiative called ‘SCARF': Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship.

The children were very excited to attend special PSHE workshops, over three days, which were held inside the LIFE SPACE classroom. All the workshops were age-appropriate and different topics were explored including ‘Friends, Decisions, Taking Care of Myself and Meet The Brain’.

The younger children were also eager to meet Harold the Giraffe, who is a main character in the SCARF scheme, and his friends. The children had a fun and engaging experience which also taught them key knowledge and skills.

In addition to these whole-school workshops, parents were invited to attend an evening consultation to discuss the Department of Education’s new guidance about Health and Relationships Education (which will be compulsory in all schools from September 2020). The background to this and an overview of the new curriculum requirements were shared with parents. There was also a presentation from a representative from Coram Life Education which explained the fantastic SCARF scheme in more depth and showcased some lessons and resources which we will use in the teaching of PSHE and RSE. After a general question and answer session, parents took a look inside the LIFE Space (portable classroom) and had the opportunity to ask any further questions.

The teaching of PSHE is crucial to help our children develop into confident, happy young people who are respectful of themselves and others - our special week has been very successful and has definitely helped to enhance this ethos.
