Year 6 have been learning about the function of the heart and the lungs, which has included mastering a variety of new and tricky vocabulary! They have produced some paper models of each of these organs and been able to identify the different parts. They have been learning about circulation in the body, the transport of oxygen / carbon dioxide in the blood and the blood vessels involved. In addition to this, the children had to estimate how much blood they thought was inside a person and were given a container with the ‘blood’ inside. This liquid was then poured into one-litre containers so the accuracy of their estimations could be assessed. Some children’s lung capacity was measured by blowing through a tube into a bottle of water (water displacement). A lively discussion took place with many interesting questions raised which the children will be researching during the next few weeks as well as making ‘blood’.
