The core subjects of English, Maths and Science continue to take up a large proportion of the timetable in the senior part of the school. Our aim is to ensure that the children leave Sherborne House with a thorough grounding in these key subjects, and our excellent results in senior school entrance exams and in Key Stage 2 National Tests show that we are working to very high standards.
In English the emphasis is very much on developing a love of reading and an appreciation of high quality literature, as well as acquiring an excellent command of written English through the traditional teaching of grammar, punctuation and spelling skills. However, we also encourage our pupils to be imaginative and creative and there are plenty of opportunities for self-expression in a range of contexts.
In Maths, we want all of our pupils to experience a sense of challenge and achievement. A strong emphasis is placed on the understanding and acquisition of basic skills and we combine traditional and modern approaches to ensure that all areas of the curriculum are covered. The children are set for Maths from Year 3 so that they can progress and learn at their own rate.
The Science department is well resourced and combines investigative and practical work with sound examination preparation in the later years. There are plenty of opportunities for research projects in all year groups.
